The first time around, it feels a bit strange. The mask. The unusual equipment is a little bit heavy. You go into the water and your face is below the surface.
You breathe in, the air comes in with a quieting low hiss, and, for the first time you're breathing under water. After a while you have forgotten the mask. All of a sudden, your gear fells light and flexible and you feel freer than ever before.
This first breath under water is like a door that has opened to another world.
While most divers, for example, take a big step to enter the water, someone who does not have full use of his legs will not be able to do this. However, there are lots of ways of getting in, such as for example rolling backwards into the water.
Although you usually put your gear on while standing or in shallow water, this does not always have to be the case. There is no reason why you cannot put your gear on while sitting, if necessary.
Divers who only have limited use of their legs usually swim with their arms and hands. Take a look at the special gloves – they have connected fingers – a feature that helps to increase the force of the divers' forward push in the water.
